"When you're hunting for the best..."
Thank you for stopping by to visit with us and our coonhounds. We are the Ford
family. John has been involved with coonhounds since he was big enough to run in the woods behind one as a child.
His father, John Ford II, raised treeing walkers under the name of Mud Lake in the Hart, MI area.
We are located in Lake County, Michigan.
Lake County is a known hunting and fishing area.
"The land of many lakes". There are 156 lakes and 46 trout streams in our county. Add to that the large swamp area known as bear swamp behind our property.
Now, that's a lot of raccoon habitat!
We choose our kennel name 'Ironwood' as our hunting area is full of ironwood trees, my favorite tree.
As we also live in Irons, it seemed a very appropriate name.
Our coonhounds are bred for hunting ability and excellent conformation and show potential.
Coonhounds also make ideal companion dogs. And yes, though we do hunt with our hounds we very much consider them our pets.
Members of our family. They are particularly fabulous with children.
Our main breed of coonhound here at Ironwood Kennel are our Redbones. We added American Black and Tans in 2008.
I recently authored the book 'Guide To Ethical Dog Breeding'. See photo to the left. More info on that to come shortly...
Proud members of ARCA, NRA and MHDF.
