These are photos of our whelping room. We are still in the process of steadily upgrading this room. Until the puppy area is finished in the large kennel, this is also where we raise the puppies until they are adopted.
The room is a very well insulated, heated, 20' x 20' room. There are two - 10' x 10' pens equipped with whelping boxes for expectant and lactating
moms. There is a chair for each for monitoring, a sound/video monitor system for checking on them from in the house and Lectro pads to keep the newborn puppies warm.
The floor is a sloped cement, which we cover in pine shavings for easy cleanup. For lighting we have vita-lights which are special fluorescent lights which closer mimic sunlight and help prevent vit B deficiency as we have no windows in this room (turnouts in our yard are regularly given).
There is an apartment sized refrigerator for storing medications as well as sodas, etc. We plan to add a microwave before the next whelping in order to heat up the water for softened puppy food.
Until my grooming area is completed in the large kennel, my grooming is all done in this room as well.
We have since painted the floors with DuraCoat. This is supposed to be super durable so we made the extra investment for it.
It is very thick and nice and shiny. Really boosted the visual appeal in this room!
Chain link panels going in for the pens.
**We no longer use the wooden whelping boxes. No way to disinfect them, etc so we burned them all and brought in simple kiddie pools. So far, we are very happy with this choice.
Soon, all the walls will be painted white - or if I get my way,
covered with those shiny white panels like they sell for bathrooms. |
